Jain, who was sent to police custody for interrogation for five days by metropolitan magistrate MM Gamit, was heckled by public and even advocates and also pelted with tomatoes.

Members of public also raised slogans demanding that Jain be handed over to them, giving the police a tough time.

The gang rape case has created an unprecedented outcry following the suicide of the 24-year-old rape victim on January 7 after leaving behind a note implicating Jain and his four friends in the rape.

Jain, who had been hospitalised after allegedly consuming poison, was arrested on Thursday evening from Delhi after he was shifted to the general ward of the Apollo Millennium Hospital there following pressure from Gujarat police.
