AIMC prefers to wait and watch

THE ALL-INDIA Milli Council (AIMC) has decided to defer its decision to support the two Muslim outfits in UP. The Council will wait and watch the strength of the UP United Democratic Front (UPUDF) of Delhi Jama Masjid Imam Ahmad Bukhari and the People?s Democratic Front (PDF) of Maulana Kalbe Jawad in UP in next few months before extending support to them. Owing to contradicting feedback, the AIMC is not optimistic about the acceptability of the two organisations among the people.

THE ALL-INDIA Milli Council (AIMC) has decided to defer its decision to support the two Muslim outfits in UP. The Council will wait and watch the strength of the UP United Democratic Front (UPUDF) of Delhi Jama Masjid Imam Ahmad Bukhari and the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) of Maulana Kalbe Jawad in UP in next few months before extending support to them. Owing to contradicting feedback, the AIMC is not optimistic about the acceptability of the two organisations among the people.

The issue came up for discussion at a national executive committee meeting in Delhi on Sunday. AIMC member Zafaryab Jilani told HT on the phone that the Council never supported any single party in UP in the past. He said that the issue of the UPUDF and the PDF would be referred to the political committee of the Council which would take a decision at an appropriate time. Maulana Khalid Ghazipuri represented chairman of the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) Maulana Rabey Hasani Nadvi at the meeting.

In last parliamentary and assembly elections in UP, the Council had made constituency-wise survey and extended support to the Samajwadi Party, the Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party. However, at today’s meeting some speakers laid stress on taking the two Muslim outfits into consideration. But, there a voice of resentment, too. Some members argued that such organisations would only harm the interest of the community. Since there was still some time for the State assembly election, the Council decided to assess their performance.

Failing to get desired support, the PDF appeared to have already been marginalised. The ruling SP has also launched a drive to woo the Muslim leaders, including the members of the fronts. There seems to be tacit understanding between the AIMPLB and the Chief Minister.

The board vice- president Dr Kalbe Sadiq already opposed the formation of the two fronts. Prominent Firangi Mahal of Lucknow has also extended support to the Chief Minister.

Besides, Jamiat Ulema Hind (JUH) has issued instructions to its cadre in UP to keep away from Ahmad Bukhari, whom the organisation has held responsible for Assam UDF’s debacle in the polls.
