AIRTEL LAUNCHED its EDGE (Enhanced Data Rate for Global Revolution) in Indore today. Airtel chief operating officer (mobility) Sunil K Goyal told media persons here today that such a product has been launched in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh for the first time by Airtel.
Goyal added that EDGE targets the high-end data-savvy mobile users. On being asked about the need of this service in Indore, Goyal replied that the City had become the target of international and national business in recent times with fast growing potential.
EDGE service is available for both postpaid and prepaid customers. It provides data transfer speeds of up to 384 kbps. EDGE has features like live TV, multiplayer games, colour wallpapers, video clips, polyphonic ringtone, music messages, jokes, news and stock tickers. The Live TV includes real time feed from CNBC and Aaj Tak. EDGE facilitates high speed downloads and complete multimedia content.
Postpaid users can avail of the service by depositing Rs 600 in the beginning and with monthly rental of Rs 299 thereafter. The service offers unlimited surfing across the country. The other plan comes with zero rental and 5 paise/kb charges.
The advance rental for six months is Rs 1,794. Internet facility can be availed with Rs 49 monthly rental and 25 paise/10 kb charges.
Airtel Live and MMS activation are currently free for postpaid users and the charges would be deducted as per downloads on basis of every message respectively.
Airtel EDGE-enabled Data Cards can be used to access Internet on national and international roaming by inserting the card in the computer system. EDGE enables services are available on EDGE ready handsets.
The range of handsets begins from Nokia 6230 priced at Rs 8,000. There are more than 200 designs in EDGE handsets of companies like Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola etc. Goyal mentioned that the company is targeting 15 per cent of the current
Airtel users as probable EDGE users. The service would also be introduced in Mhow, Bhopal and Raipur after Indore.
