The Osmania University police charged Owaisi, the MLA of Chandrayangutta constituency in Hyderabad, under section 153(A) of the IPC for promoting enmity between groups.

The police action came on the orders of a Hyderabad court on businessman S Venkatesh Goud's petition, even as another city court heard a similar petition by lawyer K Karunasagar against Owaisi.

Goud has accused the MLA of delivering provocative speeches in Hyderabad as well Nizamabad district on December 8 and 9 last year.

Karunasagar's petition is against an allegedly much more inflammatory speech Owaisi gave in Adilabad district on December 24 last year.

Following the police action, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy broke his "silence" on the matter. He said, "If anyone speaks in a voice that hurts the religious sentiments of others... law will take its own course."

Owaisi is in London for treatment, and couldn't be contacted.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Yashwant Sinha demanded the immediate arrest of Owaisi, and criticised the Centre for keeping mum on the issue.
