"Let us remember that the evil design lies in the minds and hearts of few men and women and not in the minds of all the people in the neighbouring country. Let us resolve the issues," Chidambaram said at a prayer meeting at the Gateway of India in south Mumbai.

Saluting the police officers and NSG commandos who lost their lives while protecting the country, the Home Minister said all the policemen should be given proper homes and other basic necessities.

"Let us go beyond just paying homage and build houses and hospitals for all the policemen and give their children the best of education," he said.

Asking all countrymen to unite, Chidambaram said, "The Christian should play with the Sikh, the Sikh eat with the Muslim and the Muslim embrace the Hindu."

Also present at the prayer meeting were Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, Deputy Chief Minister Chaggan Bhujbal, state Home Minister R R Patil, Union External Affairs Minister Shashi Tharoor, state DGP A N Roy and city police commissioner D Sivanandan.
