THE CONTROVERSY over the tapes containing phone conversations made by Samajwadi Party MP Amar Singh finally led to a partial disclosure of their contents on Thursday.

Amar Singh gave an interview to NDTV, which said it had the tapes, and defended himself against allegations stemming from the tapes. He also moved the Supreme Court, seeking an inquiry into the public circulation of the CDs.

The principal allegation concerned the charge that Amar Singh had spoken to UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav about the transfer of two bureaucrats and a judge of the Allahabad High Court.

A copy of the CD was also delivered to HT. But we have decided not to publish the details.
