Amarnath yatra countdown begins; over 61000 register till date

Over 61,000 people from across the country have registered themselves so far for this year's annual pilgrimage to the 3888-metre-high Amarnath cave in south Kashmir Himalayas, set to begin from July one.

Over 61,000 people from across the country have registered themselves so far for this year's annual pilgrimage to the 3888-metre-high Amarnath cave in south Kashmir Himalayas, set to begin from July one.

"Over 61,000 pilgrims have been registered for pilgrimage to the cave shrine of Lord Shiva in south Kashmir Himalayas till today as registration across the country began from June five," Jammu and Kashmir Bank officials said.

Giving break up, they said that 33,000 people have registered themselves for the yatra through the Pahalgam-Amarnath route, while 28,000 will undertake the pilgrimage through the Baltal-Amarnath route.

The registration is taking place at 121 branches of J&K Bank which is nodal agency for registration of pilgrims across the country, they said.

The yatra will begin from July 1 and conclude on August 24, the day of Sharvan Purnima, The yatra registration will go on till August 20.

As many as 3,73,419 pilgrims had visited cave shrine in 2009 and 4,98,075 in 2008.
