One person has been arrested in connection with last week’s violence in Aligarh Muslim University, police said on Friday.
Mohd Zoraiz, a research scholar in AMU’s department of law, was nabbed by Special Investigation Team of the state police from Dhorra locality and sent to jail late Thursday night after being produced in the court of the chief judicial magistrate.
He had faced disciplinary action by AMU authorities in earlier cases of campus violence as well.
SSP K Ravinder Gaur said the SIT probing the matter had been tracking the movements of Zoraiz, who had been placed under electronic surveillance since last Saturday’s violence, which left two people dead.
“This is our first breakthrough and in the next few days we are expecting further success,” he said.
A total of 15 FIRs have been filed in connection with the violence. Eight people have been named in the killing of Mahtab, a former AMU student.
Meanwhile, the Aligarh Muslim University has suspended 12 students including Zoraiz, for their alleged involvement in the violence that erupted on the intervening night of April 23 and 24, 2016, claiming two lives.
