AN APPLE a day doesn’t just keep the doctor away now. New research suggests that even cancer and Parkinson’s Disease, besides various other deadly diseases would keep away from you if you have an apple!

Similarly, pomegranate helps in countering the deadly HIV virus and good old ginger is immensely useful in arthritis, heart disease and ulcer problems.

Molasses is useful for water-borne diseases while guava helps in controlling acidity. Dr Pradeep Srivastava from CDRI made these observations on the occasion of a function held to mark the International Bio-diversity Day at CMS Gomti Nagar auditorium on Monday.

The function, organised by the State environment department, saw leading scientists and environmentalists coming together to create awareness about the need to preserve environment.

Chief guest and principal secretary, environment, Jagan Matthews said that in India, about 65,000 species of plants, animals and living organisms were found. This rich bio-diversity is unique to the country. “But, now the diversity is decreasing. Several plants and animals are on the verge of extinction. Unless proper care is taken, we will lose this precious treasure,” he said.

He also said if the felling of trees was not checked, in 25 years time we would lose precious plants and animals.

Director of environment department, Dr Yashpal Singh too spoke on the occasion. Director CIMAP, SPS Khanuja said that work was on to develop newer varieties of plants that would not require much water to grow.
