According to the team members, Vijaywada is probably the only city in the country, which has achieved total success in solid waste management. The city, with a 10 lakh population and spread over 58 square km, has three major units of solid waste management being operated by Shriram Energy for power generation, Excel Industries for generating manure and vegetable waste for biomethanisation.
Shriram Energy System generates six MW electricity while biomethanisation system generates 3255 kw power daily through garbage of the city.
Significantly, streetlights of Vijaywada city are energised through the power generated by these units. As a result, there is no garbage found in the city area. In fact these units fall short of garbage and it has to be arranged from other places.
On being told by the ANN team that Allahabad city had three slaughter houses and vegetable garbage like Vijaywada, the Melhum Engineers Pvt Limited, Pune, had offered the ANN Municipal Commissioner Gaya Prasad to set up a similar unit in Allahabad.
Similarly, Amiya, director on the Board of Shriram Energy expressed his desire to establish such a unit to generate power through the city’s garbage. Vijaywada Municipal Corporation has made available land for setting up these units.
The ANN team disclosed that residents in Vijaywada dump garbage in dustbins kept on main roads from where it is lifted by trucks and transported to these units. The roads in Vijaywada were also found free from pot holes and were cleaner and smoother in comparison to Allahabad roads.
The study team visited three-storeyed parking premises in the main market of Hyderabad to see the parking facility.
