Nearly 500 families were marooned in Sheikhmuquam and Turkpura villages yesterday due to flash floods caused by cloudburst and heavy rains. The Army unit deployed in the area immediately rushed to the area and rescued the villagers, defence officials said in Srinagar on Wednesday.

Additional reinforcements have been rushed to the spot to provide assistance to the ongoing rescue operations, they said, adding that food packets, medicines and other provisions are being provided to the affected villagers.

Meanwhile, at least 30 houses were damaged at Uri in Baramulla district in a cloudburst last night.

Minister for Irrigation and Flood Control Taj Mohiuddin today visited the affected areas in Uri and announced an immediate relief of Rs 5,000 per family and free ration for one month to the victims.
