The government has asked the Army to refine its man management concepts keeping in view the changed profile of modern soldiers.

In the wake of increasing incidence of suicides and fratricides in the Army, Defence Minister AK Antony said that a closer study of the changed profile of soldiers was a dire necessity in the present scenario.

Talking to journalists on the sidelines of a Coast Guard function, he said new studies have revealed that a significant number of troops come from tribal belts and bring new problems with them.

Pinpointing the disintegration of the joint family system as one of the main causes of stress among troops, Antony said they had nobody back home to take care of domestic issues.

The minister said the armed forces had also been instructed to improve their system of redressing complaints. He said the government would introduce the Armed Forces Tribunal Bill in Parliament in the Budget session. Cases of more than 8,000 armed forces personnel are pending before various courts.
