An explosion tore through a residential building in northern China where dynamite was being illegally made, killing 10 people, the official Xinhua News Agency said.
The blast on Thursday at Xiyankou village in Shanxi province was set off while 12 people were making the dynamite, Xinhua said.
Nine people, including an elderly woman living in a neighboring building, died on the spot, Xinhua said late on Thursday, citing police investigations. One injured person died later in hospital.
The cause of the blast was under investigation and police were looking for the owner of the building, who fled after the incident, the news agency said.
Xinhua did not say what the dynamite was being made for, but explosives are widely used in China's construction and mining industries and the illegal manufacturing of them is common.
Scores of people in China's fireworks industry are killed each year in explosions and fires. They do most of the work by hand, often at home or in small village workshops.
