"We spent the whole night recovering charred cadavers. Our workers counted 23 dead," a hospital official told the agency by telephone from the town of Tanguieta.

Twelve people died of their injuries after being hospitalised, Tanguieta hospital director Boniface Samdieni later said, taking the total number of known fatalities to 35.

"People were siphoning from a fuel truck ... When the fire broke out suddenly. The truck had broken down and was parked on the side of the road," said a medical official who requested anonymity.
