The accident comes within 72 hours of a road tragedy in southern Nepal that killed 13 schoolchildren.

The bus, carrying 40 passengers, was going towards Udaypur district from Dharan in eastern Nepal when it fell into the barrage of the Koshi river.

While four people were killed on the spot, two passengers died while being taken to Dharan for treatment.

The condition of seven more passengers is critical, Kantipur television channel reported.

The tragedy comes after a three-wheeler vehicle carrying about 25 children fell into an irrigation canal in Sunsari district on Tuesday, resulting in the death of 13. The children, aged between three and 11, were going to school.

All private schools in Nepal remained closed on Wednesday as a mark of grief.

Overcrowding and badly maintained vehicles as well as bad roads and reckless driving are the major causes of road smashes in Nepal.
