PLANNING IS afoot to invite top notch teachers, admired for their command in their chosen field of subject all over the world, to come and teach the students of Allahabad University (AU).
A high-level delegation of Tampere University of Finland is all set to arrive in India this autumn and will be visiting Allahabad University (AU) to explore opportunities of starting academic exchange programmes between the two universities in this regard.
"During my visit to Finland, I held discussions with my counterpart at Tampere University over developing academic and research tie-ups. As a result of the talks, a delegation comprising of top officials and senior teachers of Tampere University are arriving in India soon and we will be holding further talks here in this regard," said AU Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajen Harshe.
Prof Harshe said that if all goes as per plans, the members of the visiting delegation could also pen Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Allahabad University to start a new relationship between the varsities.
The University of Tampere is multi-disciplinary and committed to scientific research and advanced teaching. The hallmark of the university is sound, diverse research and teaching focused on society, its economy, administration and culture and on the health and welfare of individuals.
The MoU will open doors for Tampere University faculty members to come to AU and perform teaching and research activities besides also paving way for AU teachers and even students to visit the Finnish university.
"I am in touch with the representatives of various other foreign universities and renowned teachers within the country too all in a bid to get some very good teachers to come here and teach our students. Noted development economist Jean Dreze who is a Professor at the Centre for Development Economics in the Delhi School of Economics will start teaching at AU from January 2007 itself," Prof Harshe said.
Jean Dreze has co-authored a number of books with Nobel laureate Amartya Sen and is a member of the support group of the Right to Food campaign, an informal network of organisations and individuals committed to the realisation of the right to food in India.
Varsity sources say that efforts are also on at AU to enter into tie-ups with some other leading universities of the world also and kick-start on-line academic programmes for the benefit of the students with their help.
With majority of AU students unable to afford enrolling for a course at foreign universities and staying there till the completion of the course, such initiatives are expected to usher in a new era of quality higher education from reputed foreign universities for student right here in the city and at much reduced costs.
