Even as outsiders and students unable to produce valid identity cards or reasons for being present on the campus were pulled up and made to perform sit-ups in both the Arts as well as the Science faculties during the extensive I-card checking drive, an assistant proctor found an abandoned crude bomb in a polythene behind the Zoology department this afternoon.

It is worth mentioning that the AU Proctorial team had held a meeting recently and resolved carrying out frequent and extensive I-card checking drives in order to deter trouble makers, especially non-varsity students and youngsters, from coming to the AU campuses.

Acting on the resolution, the Proctor backed by members of his team took a round of the Arts faculty first and focused on the area near the Mass Communication department.

The Proctor had received a complaint from the Mass Communication department teachers that boys and girls are treating the place between the Mass Communication and the Physical Education department as place of frolicking around and sitting behind the hedges disturbing the ongoing classes.

True to the complaint, the Proctor found a number of students and even some outsiders who tried to run away on seeing the Proctorial team. While some girls did manage to make it to the Women's College campus from the small gate located near the Music department, many others were caught.

The Proctor confiscated identity cards of some of the students while the outsiders were made to do sit-ups and then let off with a warning.

Later, the Proctorial team also visited the Science campus and chased away a large number of outsiders. Meanwhile, Assistant Proctor Prof RK Upadhyaya found a crude bomb behind the Zoology department after being informed about it by an on-duty varsity guard. Prof Upadhyaya immediately informed the Proctor after which it was disposed off. On being contacted, AU Proctor Prof Jata Shankar said, "We will be carrying out such drives almost everyday as per our resolution. We are determined to make the campus safe for our students and will not tolerate trouble makers on the campus," he said.

Prof Jata Shankar said that each student of the varsity needs to ensure that he has a valid identity card with him while on the campus and should immediately contact the Proctor Office if there is any problem with his identity card.
