Within a few hours of the assault, in another incident, some students of the AU correspondence course barged into the examination section and misbehaved with assistant registrar (examination) Ram Babu Mishra.
These incidents took place within 24 hours of some miscreants misbehaving and threatening AU dean (Science) Prof Hari Prakash with a country-made weapon in the Department of Physics, that had led to a furor in the Faculty of Science, on Thursday.
Friday’s incident at the JK Institute took place at around 10:15 am when two motorcycle borne miscreants arrived at the Institute and caught hold of junior lab assistant Ravi Kumar.
They questioned him as to why was the building being whitewashed despite their protest, and later thrashed him. However, they fled after some other varsity employees rushed to Ravi’s rescue. Ravi sustained injuries on his face and eyes in the assault.
On being informed about the attack, AU proctor Prof HN Mishra arrived at the spot, but reportedly refused to lodge an FIR against the assailants on behalf of the varsity. He asked the injured to personally complain to the police.
This angered the employees, who argued that providing security to the staff on duty was the responsibility of the AU. They have threatened to launch an agitation in protest against the issue.
In the other incident, some students of the correspondence course barged into the AU examination section and misbehaved with assistant registrar (examination) Ram Babu Mishra.
They wanted Mishra to waive off the last date for filling up of forms. When Mishra reportedly expressed his inability to do so, they hurled abuses at him and fled.
On being contacted, AU proctor Prof HN Mishra confirmed the incident at JK Institute. “Some miscreants had warned against going ahead with whitewashing of the department building about a week back. We believe that it was them who assaulted the lab assistant. We have decided to lodge an FIR against the unidentified culprits,” he said.
Prof Mishra, however, downplayed the second incident. “I got the news of misbehaviour with the assistant registrar and immediately went to take spot.
Mishra conceded that some students argued with him, but nothing else happened,” Prof Mishra added.
