In early 2004, the UTI had filed a complaint in the Esplanade court against directors of Auto Riders Finance for allegedly misappropriating loans worth Rs 50 crore.

Patel was chairman of the firm at the time.

Acting on the complaint, the court directed the police to investigate and submit a report.

In November 2004, UTI filed an application for removing the names of Patel and two other directors from the case as they were no longer directors.

The court accepted the application and dropped the names. Two PILs were filed in the HC praying for further probe and that the three names not be dropped. The court disposed of the PILs on Thursday and directed the CID to finish the probe in six months.
