Addressing a large group of students at the JK Mehta Park, Prof Harshe, while replying to a pointed question posed by a student leader, said that he greatly valued democratic process and values but would announce the elections only when the varsity is ready with the new guidelines in this regard which would be strictly as per the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee.
The VC's statement comes at a time when the student leaders, cutting across organisational and ideological differences, are on a relay hunger strike demanding immediate elections of the students' union.
On the occasion, the VC also enquired about the problems being faced by the students. On being informed about the shortage of toilets and their poor upkeep besides a scarcity of Hindi medium books in the Central Library, Prof Harshe promised to address the issues on a priority basis.
Later, the VC visited the Science faculty where he went to classrooms and spoke to students besides also visiting some labs. The VC also paid a visit to the Commerce Faculty where too he inquired about the problems of the students and urged them to concentrate of their studies and research activities.
The surprise visit to different faculties and addresses to the students followed the VC's joining back at the varsity after a gap of around week during which, sources say, he visited Mumbai and Delhi.
