Insurgents started firing when Shyamal Debbarma, the officer in charge of Chambalpur police station, and his colleagues were returning after conducting a search operation jointly with the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) at Tuibaklai this morning.
Security personnel also retaliated forcing the militants to flee from the scene, DIG (Control) Nepal Chandra Das said in Agartala, and added that Debbarma was admitted to GB Hospital after three bullets hit him.
The joint team had went to Nandakumarpara and Tuibaklai after getting a tip off that militants were hiding there. But when they went there in the wee hours they couldn't find anybody, sources said.
Debbarma was among the recipients of this year's President's gallantry award for his contribution towards containing militancy.
