Holding that no one stood by them in the time of crisis, Bollywood actress and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan on Saturday said her family did not snap ties with the Congress on its own but were distanced.
"Bachchan pariwar khud he Congress se alag nahin hua tha balki alag kar diya gaya tha (The Bachchan family did not break up with the Congress but was sidelined)," she told an election meeting here.
Jaya said her family decided to support the SP as "in times of crisis, there was no one standing by us but Amar Singh".
The SP leaders did not just make promises but also kept them and "this quality of theirs has helped Amitabhji form a long association with them", she said.
Addressing the rally to garner support for Uttar Pradesh Revenue Minister Ambika Chaudhary, SP General Secretary Amar Singh said he expected the BSP to again forge a post-poll alliance with the BJP.
He scoffed at BSP chief Mayawati's statement about sending him and Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to jail on coming to power, saying they were not afraid.
Singh claimed the "wrong policies" pursued in Congress-ruled states had strengthened the BJP and rejected various surveys and exit polls predicting major gains for the BSP.
Party MP and actress Jaya Prada also addressed the gathering.
