Bail plea deferred, Asaram to stay on in jail till Oct 1

There’s no evading jail for rape accused self-styled godman Asaram. Days after his judicial custody was extended, the Rajasthan high court adjourned the hearing of his bail plea on grounds of ill health till October 1.

To make matters worse, the defence argument that his 15-year-old victim was a mentally unsound adult who suffered from chronic diseases, was trounced on Wednesday.

“The victim has produced a certificate by the Central Board of Secondary Education, after which her age cannot be questioned,” said additional advocate general Anand Purohit. Plus, she had secured over 80% marks in her secondary examination, which proved that she was not only mentally fit, but also intelligent. “This plea was no more than a derogatory comment,” he said.
