‘Ban’ leaves pet lovers peeved
Pet owners in a group housing society in Sector 56 are up in arms over RWA’s move to ‘ban’ pets in the complex.
Pet owners in a group housing society in Sector 56 are up in arms over RWA’s move to ‘ban’ pets in the complex. Angry over the “illegal and unconstitutional move”, pet lovers approached the Animal Welfare Board, which issued notices to officials of the Kanchenjunga Cooperative Group Housing Society RWA, seeking an explanation from them.
According to pet owners, the society has asked members to sign an affidavit, saying they would keep only one pet and would not acquire new ones. There is also restriction on adoption of animals.
“The society officials do not believe in peaceful coexistence. Our pets are properly trained. They are on a leash when we take them out for a walk. Pets are part of our family and if my dog does not harm my one-and-half year old daughter how will it harm anyone else," asked Anand Gupta, resident.
The pet owners have threatened the society management that they would shift en masse to other colonies if the RWA fails to revoke the decision.
However, the AWB notice stated that the society's action was "unlawful, arbitrary and at variance with the fundamental right of citizens". The AWB has also threatened legal action against the RWA.
