The sentence was handed down on Thursday in a crowded courtroom in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, defence lawyer Monzur Ahmed said.

Sabbir Ahmed Talukder, a member of Zia's ruling party, was shot dead by a group of about five men on February 7, 2004 at his home district Natore, 160 kms northwest of Dhaka.

Among those convicted in the attack were an opposition Awami League leader and his 12 relatives, the defence lawyer said, calling the trial politically motivated.
