This was the first abduction of a government official during Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s tenure. It took place 150 km from state capital Patna.

The BDO of Tariyani block, Manoj Kumar Singh, was abducted when he had gone to a village to inspect voters’ identity cards. The driver, a doctor and a domestic help were also abducted with the official.

The police said more than eight Maoists on five motorcycles intercepted the BDO’s jeep on the outskirts of Ladaura village and took away all four persons.

Official sources said the abduction was reported after the domestic help slipped out of captivity and reported the matter at the Tariyani police station.

The police then launched a search and found the BDO’s jeep near the village.

Director General of Police Neelmani said combing operations have been launched under the supervision of two IGs and five Superintendents of Police, including those of Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Madhubani and Muzaffarpur districts.

Bihar leader held in Kolkata

Chameli Devi (40), a sharp shooter of the Maoist squad in Bihar, was arrested on Saturday night by a joint team of special task force of Kolkata Police and personnel of Haveli Kharagpur police station of Munger in Bihar.

The arrest comes within a week after the arrest of Maoist leader Musafir alias Anand Sahani alias Alokda from the city.

While Sahani had come to Kolkata in search of a hideout, Chameli reached the city four days ago to undergo an eye operation.
