THE BEATING Retreat ceremony was held at the Motilal Nehru Stadium in the Lal Parade Ground on Sunday. Large number of citizens watched the colourful spectacle.
The musicians and buglers of the Police Band played tunes of classical, folk, patriotic and popular songs. And the two-hour programme culminated with the display of fireworks.
Governor Dr Balram Jakhar was the chief guest on the occasion. As the instrumentalists began playing with the glittering instruments the entire ground came alive with the soul-stirring music.
The tunes ranged from ‘Dil diya hai jaan bhi denge aye watan tere liye’ to Bollywood flick ‘Bunty and Bubly’s ‘Kajra re…’ that sent the young ones wild. The children were especially enthralled.
Apart from the brass and pipe bands of the MP Police, the band of 3 EME Centre was also part of the show. The musical show comprised of slow march, cradlesong, gypsy dance et al.
The event reached its crescendo as sunset neared. The audience’s galleries were choc-a-bloc with the spectators and the families of the policemen.
The Beating Retreat is an old practice that goes back to the times when tired soldiers returned to their barracks after the battle stopped in the evening. As the warriors disengaged themselves this music was played to signify the retreat.
Apart from New Delhi, the ceremony is being held in Bhopal for the last three decades. The audience’s gallery was choc-a-block with the citizens who came in good number to see the ceremony.
