At stumps on the first day of the their Group B tie at the Gangothri Glades ground, Bengal were 252 for five with most of their recognised batsmen back in the hut.
Wriddhiman Saha was batting on three, while all-rounder Sayan Shekhar Mandal was still to come as Shib Sagar Singh was sent ahead of him.
For Bengal the day began with regular captain Laxmi Ratan Shukla failing his fitness test.
Asked to bat first on a lively wicket, against some good swing bowing, the Bengal openers --- Arindam Das and Banerjee --- survived the first hour through solid defence and some luck.
Bengal had reached 52 for no loss against R Vinay Kumar and Abhimanyu Mithun before left-armer S. Aravind broke the partnership. Bowling from round the wicket, he got Das with the one that bounced, taking the edge to second slip. Two balls later, Dasgupta drove at a ball that swung into him and the middle stump was broken.
Tiwary and Banerjee then dominated the afternoon session with some positive play.
