Brahma Chellaney’s article Dragon designs (June 22) raises questions about India’s security concerns vis-a-vis China. The rising economic and military profile of China and its nuclear partnership with Pakistan are a matter of concern.

Intelligence failure

Vikram Sood’s article Intelligence quotient (June 21) packs a punch. But I don’t agree with his comment that the Vajpayee government did well by way of the R&AW. Kargil is a classic example of ignored intelligence, in this case due to euphoria over Pokhran II and the ‘Lahore Bus’. And since there definitely was intelligence failure, why was the R&AW chief promoted as Governor?

Thumbs up to Tharoor

Shashi Tharoor can bank on his experience with the United Nations to clinch the top job. By not choosing a candidate from the Indian diplomatic corps, India wants to show that the UN is an international body, not a mere sum of its member-countries.

II

One would like to know whether Pakistan has gained anything by opposing India’s permanent membership in the UNSC for the last 59 years. Does the general public in Pakistan not want a win-win situation through cooperation?

Funds for development

Apropos of the editorial Spare a thought for the urban poor (June 21), the government should realise that providing infrastructure and essential amenities to our ever-growing cities is crucial for development. Lack of funds can be countered through private sector participation.
