SMELLING RAT in the opening of bank accounts for the daily wages safai karamcharis, the additional municipal commissioner Raghvendra Vikram Singh today requested to bank managers to open bank accounts of daily wage safai karamcharis.
It is worth mentioning that following an agreement between the KMC officials and employees union leaders, it was decided that daily wage safai karamcharis would also be getting stipends through cheque.
According to sources, the move was a bid to expose several sanitation inspectors who were indulged in financial irregularity in the name of wages to safai karamcharis.
According a senior official, complaints had been received that in some cases safai karamcharis were getting half the amount while the rest going in the pocket of sanitation inspectors, while in other cases, fake names have been included just to take the amount.
To end it all, the KMC officials decided to give payments to such daily wages employees through cheques. The cheques were issued about a fortnight back.
However, it was found that most of the cheques could not be encashed by the safai karamcharis, as their accounts could not be opened in the banks.
According to sources, sanitation inspectors involved in the racket has ensured that cheques could not be encashed as it might expose their misdeeds.
Receiving such complaints, the AMC has decided to shot letters to bank managers of 20 different banks requesting them to ensure that bank accounts of such staff was opened without any hassle.
According to sources, the KMC authorities were also planning to send such letters through the district magistrate in due course of time.
The sources said that the sanitation inspectors, active in the racket knows well that if the accounts were opened, they would be exposed and could face stringent action.
