The birthday boy may have been Amar Singh, but the big star of the evening was the Big B. Fresh from his stellar portrayal of a principled cop
in Khakee, Raj Kumar Santoshi’s magnum opus, Amitabh Bachchan looked every bit the clear winner of next year’s Best Actor honour at the National Film awards, as he ushered in guests at his good friend’s birthday bash.
Looking dapper in a black suit, Bachchan was accompanied by wife Jaya, son Abhishek and daughter Shweta. “It’s difficult to define my friendship with Amar in a few words,” he remarked.
Spotted: The leading stars of the Bollywood cosmos — Sunil Dutt with son and Munnabhai MBBS co-star Sanjay Dutt; Hrithik and Rakesh Roshan; Ajay Devgan minus Kajol; Suniel Shetty with wife Mana and Jackie Shroff. Lending some glamour to the do were Aishwarya Rai, clad in a multi-coloured silk saree; Sridevi with husband Boney Kapoor and Preity Zinta.
But the last word belonged to a wit who remarked: “The Samajwadis are outside and the Starwadis inside.” He was referring to Amar Singh’s caste system that left the hoi polloi out in the cold, while the star guests had a private party in an anteroom, far away from their wide-eyed admirers. It was one party where Delhi’s Page 3 people were out of the limelight.
