The clashes quickly went out of control, forcing the police to fire 20 rounds in the air and to use teargas cells to disperse the mob.

Over 16 persons, including SDO Sushil Kumar and DSP Rajiv Ranjan, sustained injuries in the clash.

Munger range DIG Sudhansu Kumar, DM Sayed Parvez Alam and SP Shiv Shankar Jha rushed to the spot with reinforcements.

The DM said the situation was under control and additional police forces from Bhagalpur, Begusarai and Munger had been called in to maintain order in the disturbed town, some 170 kms east of Patna.

Police said, the incident took place at around 12.30 pm when clashes broke out in Hajipur locality under Sadar police station following a dispute between two groups of youths.

They indulged in heavy brick-batting. Soon others also joined the mob, which led to violent clashes on Thana road, police said.

An officer said the brick-batting continued for over two hours with the nearby buildings and shops bearing the maximum brunt.

The administration also clamped section 144 banning unlawful assembly of people.

“We have detained some people in this connection," said a officer.
