BIOTECHNOLOGY has finally made an impact on ordinary farmers in Uttar Pradesh.

The proof lies in regular visits of hundreds of farmers to the Biotech Park in Lucknow to get crude “germanium oil” distilled from a state-of-the-art herbal oil extraction and distillation plant set up at the park some months ago. The distilled germanium oil is currently being sold by these farmers to perfumeries across the state.

“The herbal oil extraction and distillation plant, set up by the Biotech Park, Lucknow, in association with the Central Institute of Medicinal & Aromatic Plants (CIMAP), has the herbal oil distillation capacity of 10 tonnes per day,” Biotech Park, Lucknow, chief executive officer Dr P K Seth told Hindustan Times.

He said the state’s farmers had been increasingly focusing on cultivation of high- value herbal plants after finding a huge demand for distilled herbal oil within the state. “Quite a number of perfumeries in and around Lucknow are already purchasing germanium oil from farmers, which had been distilled at Biotech Park, Lucknow,” Seth said.

“We have not been utilising for any complex technology transferred from developed nations to set up a herbal oil extraction plant at the park. The technology, being utilised to extract or distill herbal oil, is 100 per cent indigenous,” Seth said.

He said the trial runs of the herbal oil extraction plant had been going on at the park for quite some time with farmers bringing crude germanium oil for distillation.
The plant is ready to extract herbal oil from medicinal and aromatic plants and distill them on a commercial scale for any entrepreneur growing high-value herbs in any part of the country, Seth said.

The Biotech Park had already started publicising its herbal oil extraction capability not only to the state’s farmers who are unaware of such a facility existing in the state, but also pharmaceutical companies interested in getting their raw material processed at the plant, he said.
