The BJP on Thursday demanded that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav step down owning moral responsibility in the wake of the Supreme Court notices sent to him and his family members in a disproportionate assets case.

Speaking to reporters in Lucknow the BJP spokesman SS Dung said the chief minister's failure to reveal his properties to the people proved that he had something to "hide".

"Yadav should resign on moral grounds," Dung said.

Alleging that the law and order situation had worsened during the Samajwadi Party regime, Dung claimed that even the chief minister "was not feeling safe" in the state.

"Even the Chief Minister has apprehended threat to his life," he said.

Holding Yadav and his party responsible for the current state of affairs in Uttar Pradesh, Dung alleged that the "goonda and mafia elements" were controlling the police force.
