Sources confided to Hindustan Times that Rajnath Singh wanted to field his son Pankaj Singh from Chiraigaon assembly constituency.
Surprisingly, the BJP chief is so concerned about his son that he has started mobilising support from different quarters in favour of his son from this particular constituency even before finalising names of party candidates.
The party observers gauged the mood of the party cadre and also sought the names of the prospective candidates in all the seven assembly segments during its August 4 visit to Varanasi. Sources said names of 23 prospective candidates came up for Chiraigaon assembly constituency.
“Yes it is a fact, Pankaj Singh, son of BJP president Rajnath Singh’s name also came up for Chiraigaon Assembly constituency in the August 4 observers meeting in Varanasi,” said BJP president of Varanasi district Bachno Patil.
Interestingly, Rajnath is reported to have called Bharatiya Samaj Party president Om Prakash Rajbhar and sought his help for his son from Chiraigaon assembly constituency.
“Rajnath Singh wants that our party should not field our candidate against his son from Chiraigaon assembly constituency,” a senior leader of Bharatiya Samaj Party confided into Hindustan Times.
“Our party will definitely not field our candidate in Chiraigaon assembly constituency if our party enters an electoral alliance with BJP at the state level,” Rajbhar said.
It may be mentioned that Rajbhar’s party gave a big boost to its credibility quotient in the political circles after its role in making former Prime Minister VP Singh’s rallies successful in Varanasi and Lucknow.
Carrying a ‘yellow flag’ and ‘stick’ as its election symbol, Rajbhar has suddenly become a favourite of all the political parties who want his help in the upcoming assembly election.
Soon after he rose to the position of BJP chief in December 2005, Rajnath Singh’s son Pankaj developed taste for politics. To prove as more loyal than the king, some BJP leaders took Rajnath’s son to different places along in the public rallies to let him understand the political waters.
Chiraigaon assembly constituency is currently held by Varinder Singh, who won the by-polls three years back on BJP-Bahujan Samaj Party ticket and switched to Mulayam Singh’s Samajwadi Party and is currently a minister.
