Advani told Hindustan Times in his first interview after quitting that he was happy that “the Sangh also believes so today”.

He said he resigned as “there comes a point when one ceases to be pro-active for health reasons… I want to do other things”.

Advani said he would focus on the issue of corruption “that has permeated even the judiciary”.

He also said the RSS-proposed collegium method of decision-making did not work in politics. “You need a captain, a Mahendra Singh Dhoni… someone who is the last word,” he added.

Asked if he was disappointed he did not become prime minister, Advani said: “I realised we were not winning in the middle of the elections. Some may not believe when I say I do not have a burning ambition to become PM. I have ambitions for the party, not for myself.”
