"Communists and Congress have betrayed the common man. The hike will have a cascading effect on the prices of all essential commodities," BJP Parliamentary Party spokesman VK Malhotra said.

Maintaining that the common man was already reeling under the impact of spiralling prices, he said the hike in fuel prices would further burden the 'aam aadmi' chanting whose name the UPA Government rode to power.

"It is an anti-people act," he said, adding the party would launch a country-wide agitation against it and the details would be announced on Tuesday.

In a statement from Bhubaneswar, party President Rajnath Singh said the UPA Government's policies were affecting the common man and the party would oppose the move.
