According to information, a contractor had offered the rate of Rs 3.79 lakh in response to a tender floated by the Water Works Department. Since only one response was received, it was not approved. According to rules, a tender can be approved if at least three contractors respond to it. So, the tenders were floated again for the same work. This time, the contractor quoted the higher rates at Rs 4.39 lakh. But, the city engineers

recommended the work without negotiating on the rates. The BMC tender committee chairman and the BMC additional commissioner Abhay Bedekar found that the officials had not negotiated with the contractor before this recommendation.

Bedekar informed that the BMC commissioner had directed to issue show cause notice to city engineers (water works) V K Mishra and Sunil Shrivastava in this regard. Earlier on Wednesday, the BMC commissioner had issued show cause notice to two other assistant engineers of water works department including Ashok Pawar and K N Vijayvargiya.
