Body of evidence
Standing by each other’s side, Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik may have been a picture of composure as they faced a two-hour grilling at the hands of the media on Monday evening, in Hyderabad, but their body language still has many wondering what was going on in the sportstar couple’s mind.india Updated: Apr 07, 2010 01:13 IST
“Shoaib looked fidgety, defensive and angry at times. While he tried to show that he was calm and unaffected, he was feeling sorry for himself and desperately seeking refuge. He looked victimised. It appeared like he was planning and thinking a lot,” says psychiatrist and body language expert Dr Deepak Raheja of Hope Foundation.
Dressed in a black salwar-kameez, Sania seemed to laugh unnecessarily, says Raheja. “She looked confused and uncertain. She didn’t know how to react and whether she should stand by the decision that she has taken. She also looked fearful, and a bit victimised. She was trying to put up a brave front, show that she is cool, sure and believes in the decision that she has taken,” he adds.
Says Dr Sanjeev Kalra of Vimhans, “They were evidently anxious about their relationship. Though this was their first public appearance together, it wasn’t a successful one. Shoaib must have felt uncomfortable, that’s the reason he took Sania along.” According to him, Sania’s excessive laughter was an attempt to overcome her nervousness.
Dr Rahul Chandhok, senior consultant psychiatrist, Fortis and Batra hospitals, says, “Their appearance shows they want to be in this fight together. They have chemistry, but it was evident that they were tense and harassed.”
