Bolt slowed before the finish, smiling and reaching out to congratulate his training partner Daniel Bailey in the next lane as they approached the line together. They held the top time but other heats were still to be run before the winner was determined. It was Bolt's first 100 since he won the Golden League meet at Brussels in September.

He set the 100 world record of 9.69 in winning the gold medal at the Beijing Games, and achieved the gold and world record in the 200. He also helped Jamaica win the gold in the 4x100 relay. Bailey trains with Bolt in Jamaica and has represented Antigua and Barbuda in the last two Olympics.
