Can you name the mountains that extend across much of Wales from the Irish Sea to the Bristol Channel? Or name the East African country with the Kikuyu as its largest ethnic group? Stumped?

Not 12-year-old Bonny Jain from Illinois. Bonny breezed through 26 questions of the type to win the $25,000 top prize in the National Geographic Bee, the popular US quiz competition for middle school children.

Nearly five million kids from across the US participated in a series of elimination rounds before the finals in Washington on Wednesday.

Neeraj S Sirdeshmukh from New Hampshire walked away with the $15,000 second prize, while Yeshwanth R Kandimalla from Georgia won the $10,000 third prize.
They were followed by Suneil K Iyer and Krishnan V Chandra.
