A class 6 student of a school in Birbhum’s Panchhor village, who died at a local block health centre on Sunday night, was murdered by her lover and his family, her relatives alleged on Monday. They also said that the accused had allegedly raped her a few months ago. She was reportedly poisoned.
The victim, who was fourteen-years-old, was a student of Paikar High School. Soon after her death, the family lodged a complaint with the local police station on Monday against three persons-one Saddam Sheikh (26), the man she was supposed to marry, his sister Safeda Beowa and another brother MujibarSheikh. All three accused are absconding. The body has been sent for postmortem. When contacted, Birbhum SP Murlidhar Sharma said, “We have started an investigation after receiving the complaint. We are waiting for the postmortem report.”
According to the locals and family members, the victim, who lost her mother in her childhood, was looked after by her next-door neighbour, Safeda. The teenager reportedly got involved with Safeda’s brother Saddam and she was supposed to marry him.
However, Harun Sheikh, the victim’s uncle, alleged tha Saddam had taken advantage of the girl and raped her repeatedly. “We came to know that she had been raped when she got pregnant and told us everything,” he said. The desperate family then approached Safeda and asked her to arrange the marriage of the victim to Saddam.
Saddam said he would marry her only if she aborted the baby. The victim was taken to a quack where an abortion was done and she was given some medicine. Her condition deteriorated and she was admitted to a health centre on Sunday where she died that night. “They killed our girl. It was pre-planned,” Abdul Kader, an uncle of the victim alleged. Police are looking for the quack.
