NEARLY 46 per cent electorate exercised their franchise in the assembly by-election amidst tight security in Mohammadabad (Ghazipur) on Thursday.

According to information from the election office here, the polling was peaceful.

There was no complaint from any area in the constituency. In view of the sensitivity of the election, the police administration, apart from deploying security forces around polling station, had also stationed forces in the villages to monitor the people’s movement. The counting would be held on February 19.

Lack of interest among voters was visible in the initial hours of polling due to which some polling booths wore a deserted look for some time. However, as time passed, a large number of voters ventured out to exercise their franchise.

The Election Commission had arranged for videography and photography of the voters who failed to bring along their voter identity cards.

Prominent among the candidates in the fray included Alka Rai of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Sri Krishen of the Samajwadi Party, Keshav Ram of the Congress and Bhagelu Patil of the Apna Dal.
