Canadians lead in tsunami relief

Canada's total relief package stands at more than $70 million ? much ahead of US, Britain and France, writes Gurmukh Singh in Canada Diary.

Though Canada may have its share of problems such as drug abuse, youth violence and other usual crimes, it is rated as one of the best places to live in. Why?

Better infrastructure? Better medicare? Better social security network? Better education facilities? Lack of racism?

Yes, these are the major reasons why about 250,000 people from all over the globe make this country their home each year.

But Canada has something more that makes this country attractive and unique: its conscientious and liberal citizenry. This streak runs across the whole spectrum of this society.

And this collective social trait was on display this week after the tsunami disaster.

When the tragedy struck South Asia, Ottawa (read bureaucrats as PM and all minister were on year-end holiday) announced an assistance of one million dollars to the victim nations. Which was immediately raised to $4 million.
