Cancel citizenship of tainted MPs

IT WAS appreciable that the membership of Member of Parliaments (MPs) involved in cash for question scam were cancelled but it would have been more appreciable if the citizenship of such MP s was also cancelled. This drastic step might have checked corruption to a great extent and no MP in future would have dared to do such unconstitutional work.

This was stated by Dr LM Singhvi, a senior advocate of Supreme Court and renowned constitutional expert here on Thursday. He was addressing a symposium — Samvad organised by News Reporters’ Club on the topic — ‘Right to privacy and responsibility of media’.

On the right to privacy, Dr Singhvi said, “There would be no infringement of the right to privacy if a journalist goes deep into an issue and search the truth and thereafter tell the same to the public.”

Right to information is meant for public life and not for right to privacy, Dr Singhvi said.

Dr Singhvi appreciated the sting operations as according to him sting operations were good for a healthy democracy and administration.

Saying that no one can say that he is not answerable, Dr Singhvi said, gradually corruption was becoming a curse for society. He said that our top leaders and other persons too were responsible for the evils of corruption.
