Think Iran, and you’re probably thinking a land steeped in mystery and ruled by the clergy. No wonder, a show on Iranian video art in the Capital generated a lot of interest.

Sunday evening saw Beams Of Blue, a show comprising 13 video films from Iran, being held at the Apeejay Media Gallery on Mathura Road.

The films gave Delhiites a glimpse of Iranian life, including videos made by women about themselves and their feelings. The entire exercise was abstract and open to interpretation. As Khosro Khosravi, an artist from Iran who made a video art film called Port, said: “My art form is a entire story made on a port where life goes on, with people on the one side and the open sea on the other.

It is open to interpretation.” Like all art, he added, every single viewer could have different interpretations of the film, depending on his or her mood.

The videos were at times blurred in their meaning. There was one that aimed at showing the blacks and whites of life and how at times we merge our identities so much with what we think is right that we are in danger of losing our individuality.

Remarked Hamid Severi, Head, Research Centre, Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art: “Video art is a good way to show life and emotions. It leaves a mark.” About India, he said: “People here are very educated and they know a lot about us. I am flattered.” The event was well attended.
