Canadian director David Cronenberg used an interesting simile during a news conference to discuss his in-competition film A History of Violence. "Sex and violence have always gone very well together," he said. "It's like bacon and eggs."

People have a habit of saying they would give their left arm or right eye for a coveted film role. How about toes?

"I would amputate my toes to work with him again," said American actress Bryce Dallas Howard of Danish director Lars Von Trier, whose Manderlay is in competition in Cannes. She got the role in the second film in von Trier's trilogy after Nicole Kidman, who played the part in the first film Dogville, backed out. The final film will be called Washington.
