The fire was noticed soon after the First Flight Courier service aircraft landed in Chennai from Mumbai and was parked at the cargo terminal on Friday morning, airport sources said.
Fire services immediately rushed to the spot to douse the blaze, airport sources said.
"Six fire tenders have been pressed into service to douse the fire," they said.
No casualties were reported. The extend of damage to the aircraft and its cargo were yet to be ascertained.
Other flight services were not affected as the cargo terminal is located at the old wing of the airport, which is nearly one km away from the main airport.
