CARPET EXPORTERS and members of the weaving community apprised the visiting Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh about their problems in an Open House session here on Friday.

The programme was organised under the joint auspices of Federation of Indian Export Organization, New Delhi and Carpet Export Promotion Council New Delhi.
Chairman (Northern Region) of RK Dhawan Federation of Indian Export Organisations, said that 99 per cent of the export of this region of eastern UP comes from the cottage industries.
“The Gramodyog has vast potential to generate jobs for the villagers and artisans of this region. But they are forced to venture out to other states and to metro cities in search of jobs,” he said.
He urged the minister to consider recognition of all cottage industries under the Vishesh Krishi Gramodyog without any special parameters. One of the carpet exporters of Bhadohi alleged that Institute of Carpet Technology (ICT) was not giving proper assistance to the small weavers. He said that participation of small weavers should be ensured in ICT.
Some exporters raised the issue of poor infrastructure and lawlessness as stumbling block in the progress of carpet industry in Bhadohi, Varanasi and Mirzapur. More than dozen of carpet exporters and weavers highlighted various problems of the people associated with carpet and other traders.
Earlier, on Thursday evening, the members of Eastern UP Exporter’s Association (EUPEA) apprised the Union Minister of their problems. The exporters raised the issues of un-interrupted power supply and reform in labour law, on the occasion.
The exporters expressed concern over delay in setting up of Special Economic Zones at Bhadohi and Varanasi and demanded waving off of anti-dumping duty on raw silk, glass beads, handicraft products, handloom etc.
