CBI has chargesheeted four MTNL officials, including an Executive Engineer, in a corruption case accusing them of conniving with private builders and sanctioning bogus payment of over Rs 3 lakh in their favour.

The agency has filed the chargesheet before Special Judge Vinod Goel, accusing Executive Engineer Nihal Chand, Senior Engineer PK Bhalla, Assistant Engineer RC Bhansal and Junior Engineer Gulshan Kumar of criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery and corruption.

A private contractor, Gulshan Kumar, owner of M/s Sarvodaya Construction Private Ltd here, has also been named in the chargesheet.

The court has posted the matter to June 7, the next date of hearing.

The CBI has claimed that the accused officials, all stationed with the Civil Wing of MTNL, had allegedly passed two bills totalling Rs 3,98,936 in favour of Kumar on January 21 and September 12, 2003 as "payment" for repair work done at Sanchar Haat in Shakti Nagar.

The agency said investigation into the matter had revealed the officials had not followed any of the legal formalities before signing on Kumar.

Further, the chargesheet alleged that Kumar was paid the amount despite any documentary or physical evidence to show that the repairs were actually carried out at all.
